Duet AI vs. Bard: Key Differences Between The Google Tools

Duet AI and Bard are two popular artificial intelligence solutions offered by Google. However, these products as we know them won't be around for too much longer.

Google recently announced that it will be bringing Duet AI and Bard under the Gemini product umbrella later this year. Bard and Duet for Google Cloud will become Gemini for Google Cloud or, simply, Gemini. Duet AI for Google Workspace will become Gemini for Workspace

This change has yet to take affect, meaning many users are still using both Bard and  Duet AI. Let's explore these types of generative AI and what Google users need to know to distinguish between them — at least until the tools are rebranded.

Defining Duet AI

Duet AI is a generative AI-powered collaborator that helps you write, visualize, organize, and accelerate workflows. It is available as an add-on for Google Workspace.

Duet AI can be used to:

  • Generate text, translate languages, and write creative content.
  • Summarize documents, create presentations, and generate custom visuals.
  • Organize data, create plans, and track progress.
  • Generate images in Slides.

Duet AI is still under development, but it has the potential to revolutionize the way we work. It can help users be more productive, creative, and efficient.

Examples of How Duet AI is Used

  • A writer can use Duet AI to generate a first draft of a blog post or article or to summarize a research paper in Google Docs.
  • A marketer can use Duet AI to create custom visuals for social media posts or presentations in Google Slides.
  • A project manager can use Duet AI to create a project plan, track progress, and generate reports.

Defining Bard

Bard is a large language model (LLM) chatbot developed by Google AI. Bard was first announced in February 2023 and was released to the public in March 2023. This tool is a conversational AI tool that can be used for a variety of purposes, including:

  • Generating text, translating languages, and writing creative content.
  • Answering questions in a comprehensive and informative way.
  • Simplifying complex topics.
  • Helping with follow-up questions.

Examples of How Bard is Used

  • A student can use Bard to learn about a complex topic, such as quantum mechanics or the history of the American Civil War.
  • A researcher can use Bard to generate new ideas for their work or to find relevant information from the vast amount of scientific literature.
  • A writer can use Bard to brainstorm ideas for a new story or to generate a first draft of a manuscript.
  • A creative professional can use Bard to generate new ideas for marketing campaigns, product designs, or works of art.

Duet AI vs. Bard Comparison

While these tools are both LLMs from Google AI, they have some key differences:

  • Availability: Bard is currently available as a standalone chatbot, while Duet AI is integrated into Google Workspace apps like Docs, Sheets, and Slides.
  • Underlying Technology: Bard is based on Google's Language Model for Dialogue Applications (LaMDA), while Duet AI is based on the next-generation Pathway Language Model 2 (PaLM 2). PaLM 2 is more powerful than LaMDA, specifically designed for tasks such as code generation and data analysis.

Bard is better at:

  • Answering questions in a comprehensive and informative way. Bard can access and process information from the real world through Google Search, which allows it to provide more comprehensive and informative answers than Duet AI.
  • Generating different creative text formats. Bard can generate various creative text formats, such as poems, code, scripts, musical pieces, emails, letters, and more. Duet AI is more focused on generating code and data analysis reports.

Duet AI is better at:

  • Analyzing data. Duet AI can be used to analyze data and create reports. This can be useful for businesses and individuals who need to make data-based decisions.
  • Generating images. While Duet AI can generate text, much like Bard, it can also craft compelling visuals for you in Google Meet and Google Slides.
  • Integration with Google Workspace apps. Duet AI is integrated with Google Workspace apps such as Docs, Sheets, and Slides. This makes it easy for users to access Duet AI features from their favorite Google apps. Bard is not currently integrated with Google Workspace apps.

How Bard & Duet AI Are Used Differently

To help you understand the practical purposes of Bard and Duet AI, here are some real-world examples of how they are used differently:

Bard

  • A student could use Bard to help them with their homework by providing summaries of complex topics or generating creative writing assignments.
  • A business owner could use Bard to help them with tasks such as writing marketing copy or generating reports.

Duet AI

  • A data analyst could use Duet AI to help them analyze data and generate personalized reports.
  • A product manager could use Duet AI to help them generate user stories or create product roadmaps.
  • A business development representative could use Duet AI to create pitch deck with custom graphics.
